Transformer Shipment – Houston, TX and Sioux Center, IA

Client Name: International Freight Forwarder
Project Type: Transformer Shipment
Project Location: Houston, TX and Sioux Center, IA
Completion Date: 12/12/2014

TTS was selected to plan and execute the rail transport of a 251,000 lbs. transformer from the Port of Houston, TX to Sioux Center, IA where it was transloaded to truck and delivered for the Highland Wind Farm project in O’Brien County, IA.

The Solution

The TTS Sales, Rail Clearance, and Engineering teams worked together to select railcar equipment, create engineering designs and obtain approved rail clearances for the transformer shipment. TTS fabricated the securement materials and our Field Supervisor and crew worked closely with the Port of Houston and the Port Terminal Railroad (PTRA) to coordinate the direct discharge of the transformer from the vessel to the railcar where it was placed and secured for rail movement.

The Challenge

TTS was tasked with creating engineered clearance and securement drawings, selecting and ordering proper rail equipment, and managing the loading and securement of the transformer for rail transport.

The Results

The transformer was loaded according to all of the AAR’s open top loading rules and was safely transported via rail and delivered to the MidAmerican Energy 500 MW Highland Wind Project. The transformer will be used for electrical collection from the wind farm’s 218 wind turbines.
